Varla Abigail Blaydes is a short human woman, with an athletic build, red hair, and green eyes. Years of lock-stepping in the Almody Militia, as both a subordinate and eventual commander, have left her rather dry. She is an extremely poor conversationalist, instead opting focus on strategy, tactics, and battle. Due to events involving Mimosa Heathertoe during the Shattering of the Seals, she has a slight aversion to fire.

Backstory

Born to a wealthy farming couple, Varla's father died when she was four. Her mother remarried to another farmer, yielding Varla three half-siblings: Kessen, Kuja, and Emily. At 14, Varla's stepfather tried to mold her into a trophy wife- Instead, she started training with the Town Watch. At 18, she joined as a full member, and at 21, she was a Sergeant. At 23, she joined the local Republic militia, working her way up to the rank of Captain by 29. Within the year, her younger sister (Kessen, 24) joined the same militia branch. During training, Kessen was accidentally killed by another trainee (Utes), and Varla proceeded to maul her sister's killer. After a court martial, Varla was discharged. The death was blamed on the Sergeant running the training, Utes was cleared of wrongdoing, and Varla was deemed unfit for command but granted clemency. She, and several others under her command who left in unison to protest the decision, joined the local Mercenary's guild. She has spent a year working in the Guild, having been promoted to a Silver Ranking member.
